
PMVA – Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression
Course Overview:
This course is designed for staff working in high-risk environments where there is potential for violence, aggression, or challenging behaviour. The training promotes safe, respectful, and legally compliant methods of de-escalation, conflict resolution, and – where absolutely necessary – physical intervention.
The course meets NHS standards and is suitable for health and social care settings, mental health services, secure units, and supported living environments. Delivered by qualified trainers, the course balances safety, ethics, and legal responsibilities while prioritising person-centred care.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
Understand the causes of violence and aggression in care settings
Recognise early warning signs and triggers
Use verbal and non-verbal de-escalation techniques confidently
Apply risk assessment and dynamic decision-making skills
Understand the legal framework around use of force (including the Mental Capacity Act and Human Rights Act)
Perform safe, approved physical interventions (breakaway techniques, holds, guided escorts)
Prioritise safety, dignity, and respect in every interaction
